    CLEVELAND, Ohio — Wittenberg sophomore Stephanie Zorn (Grapevine, Texas/Colleyville) has been named Player of the Year and Wooster junior Natalie Barone (Akron, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) and Ohio Wesleyan sophomore Claire Martin (Jefferson, OH/Jefferson) shared Pitcher of the Year honors to highlight the 2005 All-North Coast Athletic Conference softball selections.

    The Wittenberg Tigers wrapped up the 2005 North Coast Athletic Conference schedule on a positive note Saturday, sweeping a pair of games against Oberlin College on Senior Day in Springfield. The Tigers topped the last-place Yeowomen by scores of 15-0 and 8-2 to finish 7-6 in the NCAC.

    In a doubleheader that was postponed three times and moved to a neutral site, the Wittenberg Tigers' North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament fate may have been sealed with a doubleheader split with the Hiram Terriers. The Tigers now stand at 9-22 overall and 5-6 in the NCAC regular season with just two games remaining on Saturday against last-place Oberlin.

    The 2005 Wittenberg softball team is hanging in there, but it is now crunch time, starting with todays doubleheader at Kenyon College. The Tigers must sweep their three remaining North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheaders to qualify for the four-team tournament at seasons end, or else they will use the last few weeks of the season to begin building toward the 2006 season.

    The Wittenberg Tigers entered a doubleheader against North Coast Athletic Conference rival Kenyon knowing they needed a sweep. Only Mother Nature stopped that from happening as the Tigers won Game 1, 7-4, before lightning and heavy rain ended the day prematurely during Game 2.

    The Wittenberg Tigers didn't get the results they were seeking on the long trip to Wooster Saturday as they dropped a pair of key North Coast Athletic Conference games, 7-3 and 10-5. The Tigers dropped to 7-21 overall and 3-5 in the NCAC, while Wooster improved to 16-8 overall and 8-0 against league foes.

    For the third straight time to open the 2005 North Coast Athletic Conference season, it could have been better and it could have been worse for the Wittenberg Tigers. In the end, the Tigers remain very much in the hunt for the conference tournament after splitting a pair of home games with previously league-leading Denison.

    The Wittenberg Tigers made the long trip to Allegheny and came away with half of what they wanted. In the opener of a key North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader, the Tigers dropped an 11-8 decision against the preseason favorites, but Wittenberg rebounded for a 9-0 victory in the nightcap to go home with an important split.

    The Wittenberg Tigers knew they were starting into a new season on Wednesday, and for a while they made the most of that fresh start with a 7-4 victory in Game 1 against defending North Coast Athletic Conference regular season co-champion Ohio Wesleyan. But the youthful Tigers were back to their old tricks in the nightcap, a 7-2 loss that left Wittenberg with a 5-17 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the NCAC.

A 5-1 victory, in which the Tigers played perhaps their most complete game of the 2005 season, in Sunday's nightcap sent the Tigers home relatively happy after three straight losses on a long weekend road trip to Michigan.

    It was just what the doctor ordered. After a brutal early-season schedule that included four nationally ranked opponents, the Wittenberg Tigers traveled to Wilmington on Tuesday and swept a pair of games against the Quakers of the Ohio Athletic Conference, 8-0 and 8-2.

    The Wittenberg University softball team struggled against another national powerhouse in both games of the doubleheader on Sunday. Muskingum College grabbed a first inning lead in both games and held on tightly to it. The Tigers were unable to respond with any offensive production as they only mustered one hit in each game.

Unfortunately, despite a change of scenery from the sunshine state to the chilly realities of spring in the Midwest, the Tigers came up on the short end of the stick two more times on Thursday, losing a pair of heartbreakers to the Thomas More Saints.

    The Wittenberg Tigers put a bow on their first-ever Spring Break trip to California with a tough 3-2 defeat at the hands of La Verne, the third nationally ranked team on Wittenberg's schedule in the first eight games. This time, it was Central (Iowa), owner of multiple national championships in the last decade, taking care of business at the Tigers' expense in a 12-4, five-inning decision.

    The Wittenberg Tigers found a new way to lose in Game 5 of their eight-game Spring Break trip odyssey to Southern California as Dominican scored five runs in the seventh inning, including four on a heartbreaking grand slam, to rally from a 4-1 deficit and beat Wittenberg 6-5. The loss dropped Wittenberg to 1-4 on the young season.
