ORANGE, Calif. - For the second time in five days in sunny California the Wittenberg Tigers dropped a game against a nationally ranked NCAA Division III opponent. This time, it was Central (Iowa), owner of multiple national championships in the last decade, taking care of business at the Tigers' expense in a 12-4, five-inning decision.
Central scored two runs in each of the first three innings, and after a scoreless fourth inning put the game away with six runs in the fifth frame. Wittenberg capitalized on four Central errors to push four runs of its own across on eight hits, compared with 14 hits for Central.
The Wittenberg offense included two hits each from freshman Sarah Fetters, senior Ashley Lands and sophomore Stephanie Zorn. All three scored a run in the game and Lands and Zorn added runs batter in. Sophomore Meghan Campbell took the pitching loss as she allowed six runs, four earned, in three innings. Freshman Taryn Hensel relieved and allowed six runs in 1.2 innings.
