Wittenberg Ends Season With Doubleheader Loss To Capital

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers hung tough in their 2005 season finale against Ohio Athletic Conference powerhouse Capital, but in the end a winning combination could not found as they dropped both ends of a home doubleheader, 5-3 and 5-1.

The losses ended Wittenberg's season with an 11-24 overall record. The Tigers were 7-6 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, but they finished one-half game out of the NCAC Tournament, which includes the top four teams at Ohio Wesleyan this weekend.

In the opener, senior Norah Gillam took the pitching loss, allowing seven hits, two walks and four earned runs (of five scored). It was her 16th appearance of the season, all starts, and her 14th complete game. She led the Tigers with a respectable 3.11 earned run average.

Offensively, the Tigers managed seven hits off Capital pitching, but five runners were stranded. Sophomore Erin Collinsworth and freshman Amy Myser had multi-hit games and sophomore Grace Wigton contributed the team's lone run batted in with a groundout.

In Game 2, the Tigers fell into an early hole for the second straight game. After allowing three first-inning runs in the opener, Wittenberg gave up two in the first in the nightcap. This time, that would be enough for the visiting Crusaders.

Freshman Taryn Hensel started and worked 6.2 innings before giving way to Gillam, who got the final out in her final appearance in the home Red & White. Hensel allowed 10 hits and one walk but just three earned runs (of five total). Offensively, the Tigers scratched out just three hits, with their lone run coming in the first as sophomore Stephanie Zorn drove in senior Ashley Lands.
