ORANGE, Calif. - The Wittenberg Tigers found a new way to lose in Game 5 of their eight-game Spring Break trip odyssey to Southern California as Dominican scored five runs in the seventh inning, including four on a heartbreaking grand slam, to rally from a 4-1 deficit and beat Wittenberg 6-5. The loss dropped Wittenberg to 1-4 on the young season.
Sophomore Jamie Bockelman put the Tigers on the board with an RBI single in the second inning, and sophomore Stephanie Zorn added an unearned run in the fourth inning after leading off with a double. Leading 2-1 in the sixth, Wittenberg put itself in good position for the win, collecting two runs on an RBI single by freshman Amy Myser. But then the first four Dominican hitters reached to start the sixth inning, culminating in the lead-taking grand slam. Then Dominican added a crucial sixth run on a wild pitch later in the inning.
Wittenberg tried to rally in the seventh as sophomore Lucy Huelsman had an RBI single, but it wasn't enough. Senior Norah Gillam was tagged with the pitching defeat as she went the distance and allowed four earned runs on nine hits and three walks. Wittenberg also had nine hits.
