Wittenberg Splits With Olivet

OLIVET, Mich. - The Wittenberg Tigers ended the weekend with exactly what they needed - a win. A 5-1 victory, in which the Tigers played perhaps their most complete game of the 2005 season, in Sunday's nightcap sent the Tigers home relatively happy after three straight losses on a long weekend road trip to Michigan.

The doubleheader split moved the Tigers to 4-16 at the halfway point of the season, while Olivet moved to 11-5. The Tigers now enter a key stretch of North Coast Athletic Conference games, starting with a Wednesday doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan.

In the opener, Tiger pitching allowed a whopping 16 hits, compared to seven for Wittenberg's offense. Both teams committed two errors, allowing the Tigers to push five unearned runs across the plate, while nine of Olivet's runs were credited as earned.

Six different players collected at least one hit for Wittenberg, led by sophomore Grace Wigton with two. Sophomore Lucy Huelsman had Wittenberg's lone run batted in as the Tigers primarily crossed the plate on errors, wild pitches and passed balls.

In Game 2, it was senior Norah Gillam who stepped up with an outstanding pitching performance. She tossed a complete-game three-hitter, allowing just one run in the first inning. Wittenberg picked up two runs in the second inning and three insurance scores in the sixth. Wigton again stepped up offensively, reaching base via the hit twice and scoring a run and driving another in. Huelsman and senior Ashley Lands had the Tigers' other RBIs.
