Tigers Pick Up First Win of the Season Over Muskingum, 12-11, in OT

NEW CONCORD, OH. – Dealing Muskingum its first loss of the season, Wittenberg's Women's Lacrosse came up big on the road with an exciting 12-11 overtime victory on Saturday, March 1, at Bullock Health and Wellness Complex. It was the Tigers' first win of the season.

Aubrey Stager (Saline, MI / Saline) dealt the deciding blow with a free position shot for a goal at the 5:37 mark in overtime. It was her fifth goal of the game. Stager took six shots, five on goal, and she also tallied seven ground balls, and five draw controls in a well-rounded performance.

Trailing 3-1 after the first period, Wittenberg fought back in the second, scoring five goals to tie things at 6-all at the half. The Tigers then jumped ahead in the third, outscoring the Muskies 4-2 to take a 10-8 lead after three were in the books. 

Muskingum scored at the 10:15 mark to come within one. Grace Kennedy (Dublin, OH / Coffman) answered with an unassisted goal with 6:11 remaining to put the Tigers up by two again. However, the Muskies struck again with 4:28 left and then with just 33 seconds to go to force the overtime.  

Wittenberg improves to 1-2 on the season while Muskingum drops to 4-1.

Team Leaders

  • Hannah Peterson (Cedarville, OH / Cedarville) scored three goals on the day, on six shots, including five on goal, and she added two ground balls, and three draw controls.
  • Grace Kennedy (Dublin, OH / Coffman) added two goals on four shots, including three on goal, and she had two ground balls and one draw control.
  • Essence Wyse (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy) and Elise Jantzen (Fairfield, OH / Fairfield) each added a goal. Wyse also added two assists, three shots, one on goal, one ground ball, and two draw controls. Jantzen had two shots, one on goal.
  • Goalkeeper Sidney Sheridan (Columbus, OH / Bishop Hartley) registered 16 saves and had 27 shots faced.

Team Comparison

  • Wittenberg had 30 shots, 19 on goal, two assists, was 5-for-14 on free position shots, had 11 draw controls, 19 ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
  • Muskingum had 35 shots, 27 on goal, seven assists, was 2-for-5 in free position shots, had 16 draw controls, 23 ground balls, and nine caused turnovers.
