Historic Win Over Wooster Opens League Play For Tiger Women

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Wittenberg women's lacrosse made a small bit of history Saturday against visiting Wooster with a 10-8 win, representing the Tigers' first victory over the Fighting Scots since 2003 and second since 1992.

Stymied for nine years against the Scots, the Tigers made it over the hump with a strong second-half effort. Wittenberg outscored Wooster 6-4 over the final 30 minutes after a 4-4 deadlock at halftime.

The win improved Wittenberg to 4-3 on the season and got the North Coast Athletic Conference slate off to a good start with a 1-0 record.

The Tigers scored the first two goals of the closing period, but Wooster answered back with two to knot the score back up at 6-6 with 11:15 remaining. But Wittenberg responded by scoring four of the game's last six goals, including two by freshmanLogan Warye (Maineville, Ohio/Kings), including the eventual game-winning ninth goal.

Warye was one of four Tigers with a pair of goals, a list which also included sophomore Francine Murzynski (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic), junior Kellen Morrissey (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) and sophomore Alie Marousek (Pittsburgh, Pa./Portsmouth (NH)).

Murzynski and Marousek also each added an assist to pace the roster in points, while junior Katie Warner (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) and sophomore Mallory Skrobot (Dublin, Ohio/Columbus Watterson) led the team with seven groundballs and Murzynski won nine draw controls.

The Tigers benefitted from an excellent draw control effort, winning 16 of 20 throughout the game. In goal, junior Katie Bondy (Westerville, Ohio/South) made eight saves, including five in the decisive second period to earn the win.

The Tigers now look ahead to a Thursday, April 5 road trip to Gambier, Ohio, to face the Kenyon Ladies in a 5 p.m. matchup.
