Tigers Top Kenyon In Key NCAC Battle

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — For the first time since 2005, the Wittenberg Tigers claimed a victory over North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rival Kenyon with a come-from-behind 16-12 decision.

The win moved the Tigers to 6-2 overall and, more importantly, 1-1 in the NCAC, heading into a key showdown at Wooster on Saturday, April 9. Kenyon and Wooster finished in a tie atop the 2010 NCAC standings. The Ladies dropped to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the NCAC with the loss.

The Tigers jumped out to a 7-4 lead by halftime, but Kenyon rallied to score five of the first six goals of the second half to take a 9-8 lead. Just when the momentum appeared to be completely in the visitor's favor, however, Wittenberg rallied to score five unanswered goals in a span of just three minutes. After neither team scored for nearly nine minutes, the two teams traded three goals apiece over the final 7:54 to account for the final margin.

Seniors Maggie Amorello (Sutton, Mass./Worcester Academy) and Jordan Beauchamp (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) scored four goals apiece to lead both teams offensively, with Amorello also leading the Tigers with four ground balls. Sophomore Erin Guiliano (Loveland, Ohio/Kings) added three goals, to go along with a game-high six draw controls, and junior Lindsey Hanners (New Albany, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls) chipped in with two tallies. SophomoreKellen Morrissey (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) contributed one goal and two assists, to go along with five draw controls.

Defensively, junior Jessica Mead (Columbus, Ohio/Wellington School)contributed three ground balls in front of junior goalkeeper Jenny Schaafsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids), who finihsed with eight saves - all in the second half.
