Tigers Battle Past Elements, St. Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. — Mother Nature has thrown everything but the kitchen sink at the Wittenberg Tigers during the 2011 season. Playing in a cold, steady, driving rain, the Tigers persevered again Saturday to pick up a 13-6 victory over host St. Vincent.

The win moved the Tigers, who have played at least four games in 2011 in inclement weather, to 8-3 overall on the campaign, heading into a challenging regional showdown against nationally ranked Adrian on Tuesday. St. vincent slipped to 1-8 on the season.

Wittenberg jumped out to a commanding 7-2 lead by halftime and cruised to the finish line with a trio of goals over the final six minutes. The Tigers held St. Vincent scoreless over the final 12:28 after the Bearcast had closed to within four goals.

Offensively, the Tigers spread the scoring around, featuring four players with multiple goals. Sophomore Kellen Morrissey (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hills) led with three goals, while senior Maggie Amorello (Sutton, Mass./Worcester Academy), senior Jordan Beauchamp (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) and juniorLindsey Hanners (New Albany, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls) added two tallies each. Junior Jenn Close (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) finished with a pair of assists to go along with a goal of her own.

Also of note, sophomore Katie Warner (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) led with three ground balls, followed closely by sophomore Erin Guiliano (Loveland, Ohio/Kings), junior Katie Frey (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) and sophomoreKathryn Murray (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) with two apiece. In goal, junior starterJenny Schaafsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) and sophomoreKatie Bondy (Westerville, Ohio/South) combined for seven saves in the game.
