Second Half Powers Tigers Past Saint Vincent In 2010 Finale

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg women's lacrosse team finished the 2010 season on a high note with a 16-9 win over visiting Saint Vincent on Saturday, thanks to a 13-goal second half to recover from a 4-3 deficit at halftime. 

With the win, Wittenberg improved to 9-6 overall on the season. The Tigers honored graduating seniors Andrea Berry (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North)Joelle Ghanem (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) and Bonnie Kenney (Lutherville, Md./Park School) prior to the game, which wraps up the 2010 campaign.

The Tigers will not advance to the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament this year, but did achieve the best start in program history with a 7-2 record to open the season under the direction of first-year head coach Nichole Johnson.

After a slow start for both teams that put Saint Vincent ahead 4-3 at halftime, the Tigers rallied for 13 goals on 26 shots in the second half. The period included an early run of five straight goals and two runs of three goals, one of which ended the game.

Ghanem took full advantage of her final game with three goals and two assists, and she led the team in shots (10), ground balls (seven) and caused turnovers (three). Kenney picked up two groundballs and notched seven saves in 51 minutes in front of the net, and Berry's strong efforts on defense went far beyond the one groundball she tallied.

Freshman Katie Bondy (Westerville, Ohio/South) spent nine impressive minutes in front of the net with four saves, enduring one of the Bearcats fiercest attacks. Sophomore Jenn Close (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) led the Tigers in goals with four and also picked up three groundballs and caused two turnovers.

Sophomore Lindsey Hanners (New Albany, Ohio/Columbus School For Girls)and junior Jordan Beauchamp (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) each scored three goals and Hanners added two assists in the game, while freshmanKellen Morrisey (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) led with three draw controls and also tallied five groundballs.
