Wittenberg Suffers Narrow Road Loss At Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Wittenberg Tigers hit the road Saturday and suffered a 12-8 setback at Lynchburg in a very evenly played game.

Despite the final score, which dropped Wittenberg to 2-2 on the season while Lynchburg improved to 4-1, the visiting Tigers actually recorded eight more shots in the game, 31-23. Lynchburg's goalie came up with 15 saves and eight goals against, compared to Wittenberg's Clare Bucheit, who was tagged for six saves and 12 goals against.

The two teams battled through a very even first half, with Lynchburg going into the break with a narrow 6-5 advantage. In the second half, the host team pulled away late, scoring the last three goals.

Sophomore Melissa Jackson led the Tigers in scoring with three goals and one assist in the game. Sophomore Kari Thomas added two goals, freshman Amber Cupples chipped in with two assists and senior Jenny Burns finished with one goal and one assist to round out the multi-point scorers for the Tigers. Sophomore Michelle Hanners and freshman Emine Cirpili rounded things out with one goal apiece.

Wittenberg, which also held a 42-40 advantage in ground balls for the game, will try to get back on the winning track tomorrow at Bridgewater State. Start time is slated for 2 p.m.
