SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers controlled play from start to finish, and they were finally rewarded with an overtime goal by sophomore Emma Hawthorn (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade Julienne) that secured a 1-0 shutout of visiting Pitt-Bradford.
The win evened Wittenberg's record at 1-1-0 on the young season, which continues with a neutral site match-up against Fredonia State at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, at Capital. Pitt-Bradford dropped to 0-1, heading into the second game of a doubleheader at Capital on Sunday against the host Crusaders.
The game was delayed by about one-half hour due to thunderstorms in the Springfield area. Once play started, the Tigers outshot Pitt-Bradford 15-3 and attempted seven corner kicks to just one for the visitors. However, it took more than 98 minutes for Wittenberg to finally dent the scoreboard.
The game-winner came off a cross from senior Zoe Curry (Milford, Ohio/Ursuline). Her ball into the box found Hawthorn's head, and was re-directed into the upper 90 of the Pitt-Bradford goal.
Freshman Shannon Brueck (Loveland, Ohio/Milford), sophomore Lauren Hofer (Avon, Ind./Cardinal Ritter) and Hawthorn each were credited with three shots in the game to lead Wittenberg's offense. At the other end of the turf, sophomores Alexa Murrietta (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge) and Hannah Wilson (Pickerington, Ohio/North) split regulation time in goal before Wilson picked up her first collegiate victory by minding the net during overtime.
