CINCINNATI, OH - Fresh off an upset of nationally ranked Calvin, the Wittenberg Tigers found life on the road challenging as they dropped a 1-0 decision at Mount St. Joseph.
Wittenberg stands 1-3 on the season as the Tigers turn their attention to a busy weekend. Things start with a road trip to Mount Union on Saturday, and the weekend concludes with a home date against Capital on Sunday. Mount St. Joseph is now 1-2-1.
The two teams played to a statistical standoff over the opening 45 minutes, with Wittenberg and Mount St. Joseph splitting 10 shots right down the middle. Both goalkeepers came up with two saves in the first half, and Wittenberg held a 4-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Mount St. Joseph got the upper hand in the second half, and the Lions paid it off with a goal seven minutes in. Wittenberg managed just two shots and one corner kick in the second half, compared to 13 MSJ shots, including four directed on goal.
Wittenberg goalkeeper Lily Winkle (Cynthiana, KY / Harrison County) finished the game with six saves. Offensively, Grace Koperna (Macedonia, OH / Nordonia) and Brooke Mullis (Lawrenceburg, IN / Taylor) led the way for the Tigers with two shots, while Rachel Spencer (Columbus, OH / Bishop Watterson), Sarah Deaton (Monroe, OH / Monroe ), and Caroline Thomas (Perrysburg, OH / Perrysburg) added one shot each. Koperna, Spencer, and Deaton took shots that forced MSJ's goalkeeper into saves.
