SPRINGFIELD, OH - Through the first three games of the 2024 season, Wittenberg Men's Soccer had absorbed a pair of shutouts. It wasn't for a lack of offensive opportunities, however, as the Tigers had more than matched their first three opponents in shot attempts.
Heading into a midweek contest against visiting Mount St. Joseph, Head Coach Dwight Burgess felt confident that the goals would eventually come for his team. Thanks to continued quality play in the build-up, the Tigers created even more scoring opportunities, and this time they made the most of those opportunities in a 5-1 victory over the Lions.
The win moved Wittenberg to 1-2-1 on the season, heading into another home date on Saturday, September 14, this time against Capital. Mount St. Joseph fell to 0-3.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the 20th minute as Cameron Elliott (Springfield, OH / Springfield) found the back of the net without the benefit of an assist. Wittenberg broke the game open almost immediately in the second half as Kees Ciric (Loveland, OH / Loveland) tallied twice in the first 13 minutes and Jack Pascoal (Liberty Township, OH / Lakota East) put the game out of reach with two goals in the span of just five minutes.
Mount St. Joseph spoiled Wittenberg's clean sheet in the 86th minute, but it was still a good night for Tiger goalkeeper Sam Nitzberg (Cincinnati, OH / Cincinnati Country Day) as he turned away two of the three MSJ shots that were directed on frame. At the other end of the pitch, Wittenberg piled up 25 shots, including 17 on goal. The Tigers held a commanding 7-0 advantage in corner kick opportunities as well.
