GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The DePauw Tigers continued their mastery of not just the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) but of all of NCAA Division III with a 59-38 victory over the visiting Wittenberg women's basketball team.
The loss dropped Wittenberg to 8-6 overall and 3-3 in the NCAC, heading into a road trip to Oberlin on Saturday, Jan. 18. DePauw won its 49th straight game over the course of nearly two full years, improving to 15-0 overall and a league-leading 6-0 in the NCAC.
Wittenberg actually jumped on top, scoring the game's first five points. DePauw responded with the next nine points, and by halftime the host Tigers had built a stunning 33-12 advantage.
The two teams split 52 second-half points right down the middle, but the game was never in doubt. The host Tigers led by as many as 30 points before the visitors ended the game on a 9-0 run.
Wittenberg was limisted to just 26.5 percent shooting in the game, including a 4-of-21 performance over the opening 20 minutes. DePauw responded with 45 percent shooting.
The visiting Tigers won the rebounding battle 33-30, but the host team committed six fewer turnovers. Individually, Wittenberg was paced by senior Amber Rice (South Charleston, Ohio/Southeastern) with 15 points, three rebounds and three steals. No other Wittenberg player managed more than five points in the game.
