Witt Women’s Volleyball Falls To Nationally Ranked Transylvania
SPRINGFIELD, OH – Wittenberg's Women's Volleyball team couldn't catch fire against a hot Transylvania team which defeated the Tigers in three straight games extending its win streak to nine in a row at Pam Evans Smith Arena Wednesday evening.
Wittenberg battled the Pioneers, ranked 25th in the latest national poll, in the first two games losing by scores of just 25-21 and 25-20, respectively. Hurt by service errors in game one, the Tigers were ahead 21-20 but lost the next five points, two of which came off kills by Transy's Kayden Holcomb. The score was tied at 10-all in the second before the Pioneers went on a 10-3 run to take a 20-13 lead. Witt scored a few more to make it respectable in game two before falling 25-14 in game three. With the loss, Wittenberg drops to 5-5 overall and 2-2 on its home court.
Kait Colahan (Vermilion, OH / Vermilion) led the Tigers in kills with nine and Piper Ricketts (Morrow, OH / Little Miami) added seven more. Celia Orr (Lexington, KY / Frederick Douglass) led the team in assists with 12, Mary Sulfridge (South Charleston, OH / Southeastern) added 11 assists with 10 digs, and Ava Golem (Kirtland, OH / Kirtland) had 12 digs on the night. Team totals for the Tigers included 32 kills, 28 assists, and 49 digs.
Cate Scheper led the Pioneers in kills with 12, Holcomb added nine, and Grace Ward had 27 of their 33 assists. With the win, Transylvania improves to 9-5 overall.
Up next, the Tigers will compete in their first North Coast Athletic Conference match of the season when they take on Ohio Wesleyan at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Pam Evans Smith Arena.
