Tigers Fall to Trine in Last Non-Conference Game of Season
Angola, IN - Wittenberg Men's Lacrosse traveled to Indiana to take on Trine in what is their last non-conference game of the season. Trine got out to an early lead and kept the Tigers at bay until halftime. By the time the final horn sounded, Trine defeated Wittenberg by a score of 14-7. With the loss, Wittenberg falls under .500, to 3-4, while Trine improves to 10-1 on the season.
In the first half, the Tigers were not able to find the back of the net, but the Thunder scored three goals in the first quarter and followed it up with four in the second to go into halftime with a 7-0 lead.
In the second half, the Tigers were able to get some more shots and goal and eventually got some past Trine's goakeeper. First to score for the Tigers was Dillon McKeigue (Olmstead Township, OH / St. Edward) as he scored an unassisted goal less than a full minute into the second half. McKeigue scored twice more in the third quarter and Blake Roller (New Albany, OH / St. Charles) added another to total four goals, but Trine was able to get four of their own in the third as well. In the fourth, both teams were even in goals once again, with each team netting three in order for produce the final score of 14-7.
Team Leaders
- McKeigue scored three goals on the day, as four other players each had one goal each, and three different Tiger players notched an assist.
- Quentin Rudolph (Grand Rapids, MI / Forest Hills Central) picked up six ground balls to pace the team, and Max Benincasa (Shaker Heights, OH / Shaker Heights) and Charlie Frederick (Chagrin Falls, OH / Chagrin Falls) each logged three.
- Fredrick also won eight of his 10 face-offs for the most face-off wins and the highest face-off win percentage on the team.
Team Comparison
- Wittenberg and Trine were very close in the battle for ground balls, with the Tigers picking up 35 and the Thunder grabbing 37.
- The Tigers also won 15 of the 24 face-offs against the Thunder and Wittenberg led in saves as well, 12 to nine.
The Tigers' next game will be at home on Saturday, April 5, as Wittenberg plays host to North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rival Oberlin at Edwards-Maurer field. Opening face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
