Tigers Split Opening Weekend In First Competitions In Over A Year

Springfield, OH – The Wittenberg women's volleyball team returned to action over the weekend, playing their first two matches in over a year. The Red and White began their 2021 spring season with a trip to Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Battling Bishops 3-1 [25-21, 26-28, 22-25, 11-25]. Wittenberg bounced back on Sunday, taking down DePauw 3-1 [24-26, 25-5, 25-17, 25-14].

Ohio Wesleyan Match Breakdown

Katie Hiestand led the Tiger attack, logging double-digit kills with 14 on 38 total attacks on Saturday afternoon. Hiestand recorded a .289 kill percentage, adding five digs while getting in on four blocks against the Bishops. Sidney Reeder contributed 10 kills for the Tiger offense on the day. Hannah Schartz logged a team-high kill percentage putting down five kills on 10 swings without an error on the day, adding four digs and a block assist. Ashley Brooks facilitated the Wittenberg offense with 20 assists, adding four digs. Mack Rickets added 16 assists with two digs. Dakota White and Nicole Belanger combined for 27 of the 44 Wittenberg digs on the day.

DePauw Match Breakdown

A trio of Wittenberg Tigers tallied double-digit kills on the day against DePauw, led by Reeder and Gabi Hancock with 12 kills apiece, Hiestand put down 10 kills of her own. Tyler Linkhart was close behind, posting nine kills on 20 swings for the Red and White. Hancock posted a team-high .321 kill percentage, getting in on four blocks on the day. Belanger led the Red and White in digs with 25, while Brooks tallied a team-high 43 assists.

Wittenberg will return to action on Friday, April 9 for two matches hosting the Denison Big Red from Pam Evans Smith Arena. First serve is set for 5:00 pm.
