Wittenberg Tops Wisconsin-Whitewater To Claim Elmhurst Invitational Title

ELMHURST, Ill. - During any season, there are several key match-ups that test a team's mettle and provide important measuring sticks. In the final match of the Elmhurst Invitational, the Wittenberg volleyball team was tested in just such a way, and once again the Tigers came through splendidly, this time with a 3-1 win over nationally ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The win, which improved second-ranked Wittenberg to 24-1 overall on the 2004 season, was another opportunity for the Tigers to measure themselves against a perennial powerhouse program with national pedigree. Two years ago, the Tigers travelled to Wisconsin-Whitewater and lost 3-1 in the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals. Wisconsin-Whitewater went on to win the national title.

This time, Wittenberg jumped on top 2-0 with solid game victories of 30-28 and 30-26. After Wisconsin-Whitewater rebounded with a 30-20 win in Game 3, the Tigers showed who was boss with a 30-14 smackdown in the fourth frame. Junior Emily Dixon rounded out a terrific weekend statistically with 17 kills and four blocks, while freshman Emily Bell added 14 kills, freshman Lindsey Penrod was outstanding with six blocks and senior Kristin Fox chipped in with 14 kills and five blocks. Emilie Schmid earned mention again, this time as a result of 27 digs.

Seniors Monica McDonald and Sarah Yuskewich were named to the Elmust College Volleyball Invitational III All-Tournament Team.

The Tigers have a week to rest up after six matches in the last five days. They next travel to Emory in Atlanta, Ga., where several top-caliber opponents figure to again test the Tigers, including the host team and California State-Hayward.
