Women's Tennis falls to Denison in NCAC Tournament semifinals

WOOSTER — The third-seeded Wittenberg women's tennis team fell 5-1 to second-seeded Denison in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals on Saturday, ending the Tigers' 2023-24 season.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (14-5 overall), Denison (17-8 overall)
  • Venue: Wooster Tennis Courts - Wooster, Ohio
  • Junior Caroline Sproule (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) is ranked 12th among singles players in NCAA Division III Region 5 in the latest rankings, which were released on April 28. Sproule and freshman Kylie Wilson (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) are ranked eighth among doubles teams in Region 5.
  • Wittenberg is now 2-46 all-time against Denison. The Big Red defeated the Tigers 7-2 in Springfield during the regular season on March 28.
  • Wittenberg's 14 victories this season are its most in a season since finishing 19-6 in 2010-11.

The Match

  • At No. 1 doubles, Sproule and Wilson fought back from an early deficit to tie the score at 7-7 and then recovered from two points down in the tiebreaker to win 8-7 after taking the tiebreaker by a 9-7 score.
  • Denison took the No. 2 and No. 3 singles courts by respective scores of 8-1 and 8-0.
  • In singles play, Denison closed out the match by defeating freshmen Claire Loomis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, Sophia Pischalko (Granger, Ind./Penn) 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, and Breanna Ball (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5.
  • With the match clinched, the remaining three singles courts were halted. Sproule held a slim 5-4 lead in the first set at No. 1, Wilson had won her first set 6-4 and was tied 1-1 in the second, and freshman Lilly Hartman (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) trailed 0-6, 1-5 at No. 6.

Season Records

  • Sproule is now 25-9 overall, including 12-4 in singles and 13-5 in doubles.
  • Wilson is now 28-9 overall, including 14-4 in singles and 14-5 in doubles.
  • Loomis is now 19-16 overall, including 8-10 in singles and 11-6 in doubles.
  • Pischalko is now 27-10 overall, including 12-6 in singles and 15-4 in doubles.
  • Ball is now 27-9 overall, including 12-5 in singles and 15-4 in doubles.
  • Hartman is now 22-10 overall, including 10-4 in singles and 12-6 in doubles.
