Tigers Double Up With Wins Versus Otterbein, Sinclair

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg women's tennis team put two more wins in the books Saturday, hosting Otterbein for a 6-3 victory and Sinclair with a 9-0 sweep. The women move to 3-0 in the fall portion of their 2010-11 season.

In the early match versus Otterbein, the Tigers went 2-1 in doubles play, setting up a sprint to the finish, which Wittenberg won 4-2 in the singles portion. Junior Jackie Stevens (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) and junior Maggie Stewart (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat) were winners at second doubles by an 8-1 final, while junior Anne Beauch (North Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) and freshman Emma Bilyeu (Terre Haute, Ind./Vigo) won the third slot, 8-0.

Stevens and Stewart again teamed up for doubles against Sinclair, winning in the No. 1 spot 8-0 ahead of two other wins, one by retirement, to sweep the doubles, before Wittenberg took all six singles matchups for the sweep.

In singles, Stevens and Stewart were both winners against Otterbein, while a fresh lineup took on Sinclair. Freshman Leah Ann Miller (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) was a No. 1 singles winner against Sinclair but dropped a 7-6, 6-1 decision versus the Cardinals.

Also taking home wins against Otterbein were senior Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and junior Alexandra Cummins (New Lebanon, Ohio/Dixie). The Tigers used fresh faces against Sinclair, getting victories from sophomore Kristin Wright (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) at No. 2, junior Kacia Nolan (Speedway, Ind./Speedway) at No. 3, Bilyeu at No. 4 , freshman Jessica Coggins (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) at No. 5 and freshman Sarah Ziska (Bay Village, Ohio/Lake Ridge Academy) at No. 6.

The Tigers next rest up for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional hosted by Washington University in St. Louis on Friday, Oct. 1, through Monday, Oct. 4.
