Tigers Squeak Past Northwestern Ohio, 5-4

LIMA, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers were pushed to the brink by NAIA scholarship program University of Northwestern Ohio, but junior Maggie Stewart (Rocky River, Ohio/Magnificat) picked up a hard-fought three-set win that decided the outcome of a 5-4 Tiger victory.

The win moved the Tigers to 14-3 on the 2010-11 season, while the Racers dropped to 10-7.

Stewart won the first set 6-1 before dropping a 6-1 decision in the second set to UNO's Shay Warman. They battled through a close third set before Stewart pulled it out 6-4, making three-set matches at No. 2 and No. 6 singles ultimately inconsequential. The Racers won both of those matches to pull within one point on the final scoreboard.

Freshman Leah Ann Miller (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) was a double winner on the afternoon, claiming victories at No. 2 doubles and No. 1 singles after her opponent withdrew due to injury. Senior Rachel Bundy (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) was the Tigers' other double-winner at No. 3 doubles and at No. 5 singles. She was in the third set when her opponent was forced to retire.

The Tigers return home on Tuesday to take on another scholarship program. Cedarville comes calling for a 5:30 p.m. match at the Georgiana Albright Tennis Complex.
