Tigers Win Two Of Three To Cap Tremendous Spring Break Trip

HILTON HEAD, SC — A season-opening win streak may have come to an end, but the Wittenberg Tigers continued to produce quality results as their 2011 Spring Break trip came to an end with two wins in their last three matches.

Wittenberg improved to 11-1 overall with wins over Malone and Mount Union and a loss to Northern Kentucky. The Tigers are now off until a match at NCAA Division I Dayton on March 27.

The win over Malone came after play was suspended Wednesday, March 9, due to rain. The Tigers led 4-2 when play was halted, but sophomore Kristin Wright (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) was awarded a win at No. 6 singles when the two teams were unable to schedule a time to complete the match.

Senior Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) was the Tigers' lone double-winner in the match as she picked up victories at No. 2 doubles, with freshman Emma Bilyeu (Terre Haute, Ind./Vigo), and at No. 2 singles.

Against NCAA Division II powerhouse Northern Kentucky on Thursday, March 10, freshman Leah Ann Miller (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) went to three sets at No. 1 singles before falling. She and the rest of the team bounced back against Mount Union on Friday, March 11, with a 7-2 victory.

Miller won at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, also with Bilyeu, and Miely picked up wins at No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles.
