Tigers Drop Opening Match at NCAC Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Tigers kicked off the 2009 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament with a strong start, taking two out of three doubles matches against Allegheny. The Gators turned the tables, however, in singles play, where Wittenberg fell 4-1 en route to a 5-3 defeat at the hands of the Gators.

Sophomore Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington)and freshman Jackie Stevens (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson)paired up for an 8-4 victory at third tier doubles. Miely would later score the Tigers' lone singles point with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win at second flight.

Senior Allison Earhart (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) and freshman Maggie Stewart (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat) combined for the other Wittenberg point in an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.

The loss drops Wittenberg into the consolation bracket, where they meet NCAC West foe Earlham at 9 a.m. on Sunday, April 26. From there, the Tigers will advance to either the fifth place or seventh place match later in the day.
