Tiger Men Win Big, Women Fall Just Short At Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio — The Wittenberg swimming and diving teams traveled to the College of Wooster Saturday, and the men brought home a big 174-63 win, while the women fell 129-108 to the Scots. The men are now 2-0 in their dual meet schedule, while the women are 1-1.

The meet's swimming portion, held at Wooster High School, started with six straight Tiger first-place finishes, three each for the men and women. The men went on to win 12 of 13 events, one of the best dual meet performances in program history.

It all started with the men's 200-yard medley relay, an event won by the team of junior Teddy Hutchinson (Sudbury, Mass./Sudbury-Lincoln Regional), senior Phil Bambach (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome), freshman Jack Ruble (Woodridge, Ill./Naperville) and freshman Jon Drewsen (Fond du Lac, Wisc./Fond du Lac) with a time of 1:40.85, led by Drewsen's 21.89 anchor leg.

Sophomore Chris Culkin (Novi, Mich./Northville) won the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:13.30, before sophomore JB Easley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seven Hills) took first in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.42. Drewsen followed up the relay win by muscling out a .11-second win over Wooster's Adel El-Adawy in the 50 free.

Bambach added an individual win in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:04.08, while relay teammate Ruble snagged a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly and senior Zach Stewart (Vincennes, Ind./Lincoln) beat the field in the 100 free.

Hutchinson piled on a win in the 100 back and Culkin won his second event, the 500 free, before the Scots took their only first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke. The men's swimming night concluded with a 200 free relay win for the team of Stewart, Drewsen, Easley and Culkin.

In the diving well, back at the College of Wooster's Timken Natatorium, junior Gus Appenbrink (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) won both the 1- and 3-meter events. Representing the women, senior Megan Shubitowski (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) also swept the diving events.

The women's swimming events began with a 200 medley relay win for the crew of freshman Sarah Wilson (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe), freshman Molly Gustafson (West Hartford, Conn./Conard), sophomore Jane Tsivitse (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) and sophomore Ward McNulty (Glencoe, Ill./New Trier). Freshman distance swimmer Courtney Carani (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) followed with wins in the 1000 and 200 free events before Wooster took their first event.

Gustafson added an individual win in the 100 breaststroke to cap things off.

Up next for the Tigers is a double dual meet on Saturday, Nov. 6, against host and future North Coast Athletic Conference opponent DePauw University and Franklin University, beginning at 1 p.m. in Greencastle, Ind.
