Wittenberg Loses First Game Of Season

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Wittenberg suffered its first loss of the season, but the Tigers didn't go down without a fight. The Tigers lost to nationally ranked North Coast Athletic Conference powerhouse Ohio Wesleyan in double overtime, 1-0, Saturday at Bill Edwards Field.

When the Battling Bishops stepped onto the field, they were not the only team that earned the right to be associated with the name battle. The Tigers came out with determination and pride. After losing freshman goalkeeper Meghan O'Rourke to injury, the Tigers seemed to be in trouble until senior Eileen Quinn came in and played well to keep the Tigers tied throughout regulation. Quinn recorded five saves on the day in her outstanding performance in goal.

The Tigers held the Bishops off until Ohio Wesleyan sophomore Maggie Ellis finished a ball from junior Sarah Wall to give the game-winning goal deep into the second overtime period. The two teams were very even throughout, both on the physical field of play and on the statistics sheet.

Wittenberg fell to 2-1 in the NCAC and 7-1-4 overall. The Tigers will be back in action Wednesday as they host Earlham.
