Tiger Women's Lacrosse Comes Up Short Against Allegheny, 14-10

MEADVILLE, Pennsylvania-  After seeing there 31-game winning streak in NCAC play snapped last week, the Tigers women's lacrosse program looked to bounce back to championship caliber play against the Allegheny College Gators on Sunday. The Tigers made the trek out to Pennsylvania and fell to 1-2 in NCAC play as the Gators wound up on top, 14-10. Wittenberg was plagued by turnovers on Sunday afternoon, as the road-team surrendered 23 possessions in the loss. Wittenberg now returns home to Springfield to regroup for the rest of their NCAC schedule.

 

GAME BREAKDOWN

  • Early on, the Tigers found themselves down 5-0, before a Carrie Kubasta (Medina, Ohio/Medina) goal, on a beautiful pass by Becca Joseph (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula) found the back of the net.  
  • Wittenberg was able to claw back to make things 6-5 when Olivia Lash (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) capitalized on a free position shot with 3:12 remaining in the half.  
  • Ultimately, the Gators answered the bell, taking a 7-6 lead into halftime.
  • Out of the break, Wittenberg again let the Gators produce five unanswered goals before Jospeh stopped the bleeding with a tally to cut the Gator lead to 13-9.
  • With 5:02 remaining in the game, Victoria Zysik (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) deposited a Joseph pass past the Gator goalie to make things 13-10.
  • Wittenberg would not score for the final five minutes of the contest, allowing Allegheny to tack on one more insurance goal, as the game ended 14-10.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • With over 40 minutes played in net, Mary Furlong (Louisville, Kentucky/Sacred Heart) collected eight saves on the day for the Tigers.
  • The Tigers managed to get 20 of their total 29 shots on goal in the contest, as the unit also dished out three assists.
  • 14 of Wittenberg's total 23 turnovers were caused by Allegheny, as the remaining nine were unforced errors.

KEY STATS

  • Joseph continued to be a force to be reckoned with on Sunday, as the junior slated five goals in the NCAC matchup.
  • Kubasta, Lash and Emily Wadds (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming) all chipped in one goal for the Tigers on Sunday.
  • Wittenberg was bested in ground balls in the game, as the Gators collected 26 to the Tigers 25.
