GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wittenberg women's lacrosse team won the second half 9-7, but the strong effort was not enough to unseat Guilford College on Wednesday, as the Tigers fell by a final score of 19-16.

At halftime, the Tigers trailed 12-7 despite two goals from a pair of players: junior midfielder Francine Murzynski (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and sophomore midfielder Logan Warye (Maineville, Ohio/Kings). Wittenberg entered the second half with energy and surprised Guilford by cutting the deficit down to just one goal with nine minutes left.

The resurgent Tigers outshot Guilford 19-12 and won 11 of 17 draw controls in the second period after being outshot 21-14 and winning just 4-of-20 draw controls in the first.

Murzynski added four goals in the second half, and right behind her was junior midfielder/defender Alie Marousek (Ballston Lake, NY/Portsmouth, N.H.), who scored three in the period and four in the game. The other two goals in the second were accounted for by senior midfielder Erin Guiliano (Loveland, Ohio/Kings) and Warye.

Murzynski totaled six goals in the game, followed by Marousek with four, Warye with three and Guiliano with 2. Junior attacker Nicolette Lyons (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) filled out the balance with one score.

Marousek also assisted on two goals, while Murzynski and Warye each counted one assist. Murzynski secured five draws and shared the team lead in groundballs with senior defenders Katie Warner (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) and Elyssa Silva (Golden, Colo./Golden) at four each. Marousek, junior defender Mallory Skrobot (Dublin, Ohio/Watterson) and senior goalkeeper Katie Bondy (Westerville, Ohio/South) all posted three pickups.

Bondy spent all 60 minutes in goal and made seven saves in the game.

The Tigers return to campus for their next contest, a 4:30 p.m. meeting with third-year program Olivet College on Thursday, March 14, at Edwards-Maurer Field. Look for live statistics, audio and video on WittenbergTigers.com
