Wittenberg Pulls Out Overtime Win At Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio — In a game that featured five lead changes as the two teams poured in a whopping 29 goals, the Wittenberg women's lacrosse team scored the two most important in a 15-14 overtime victory at North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rival Kenyon.

The win put the Tigers and first-year Head Coach Beth Hemminger in an unexpected position atop the NCAC standings at 2-0. It was Wittenberg's fifth win in six games since starting the season with a pair of losses during Spring Break in Florida.

Kenyon took an early 3-1 lead and seemed to have the game under control after an Alex Bair goal at the 24:40 mark of the second half that gave the Ladies a 10-6 lead. But the Tigers responded with five straight goals, including three by sophomore Alie Marousek (Pittsburgh, Pa./Portsmouth (NH)), over the next 12 minutes.

The teams traded the lead twice through the end of regulation before ending up in a 14-14 deadlock after freshman Kim Loofbourrow (Prospect, Ky./Ballard) tied the game with just 30 seconds remaining on a free-position shot. That set the stage for a six-minute overtime period that featured just one goal with just 48 seconds left on the clock as Marousek found the back of the net after a Kenyon yellow card gave the Tigers a man-up advantage.

Marousek finished with a career-high seven goals, while junior Kellen Morrissey (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) and junior Erin Guiliano (Loveland, Ohio/Kings) added two scores apiece. Sophomore Jessica Jensen (Hartland, Wisc./Arrowhead) was outstanding in goal over the final 29:10, making four saves to help spark the rally.

Marousek also led the Tigers with six ground balls, while Morrissey added five. Sophomore Francine Murzynski (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) topped both teams with a whopping nine draw controls.
