SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg women's lacrosse team led wire-to-wire in a 12-9 win over Washington & Jefferson Saturday at Edwards-Maurer Field, improving to 3-3 on the season.
Sophomore Alie Marousek (Pittsburgh, Pa./Portsmouth [NH]) got the Tigers up early with an unassisted goal less than a minute into the game. It was the first of two goals for Marousek in the game.
The Tigers scored the next three goals to take a 4-0 and were comfortably in command until the Presidents' Brittney Oake brought her team within one goal at 6-5 near the end of the first half. Wittenberg then opened the scoring in the second half on a goal by freshman Beth Hubbard (West Hartford, Conn./Notre Dame de Sion [Mo.]), but W&J again closed within a goal three minutes later.
Responding to the pressure, Wittenberg then opened up another big lead with a four-goal run to make it 11-6 with 12 minutes to go. The Presidents' were unable to close the gap again, leaving the Tigers to cruise to the victory.
Junior Kellen Morrissey (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) led Wittenberg with three goals in the contest to go with one assist, followed by sophomore Francine Murzynski (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) who logged two goals and two assists.
Senior Lindsey Hanners (New Albany, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls), sophomore Nicolette Lyons (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), freshman Kim Loofbourrow (Prospect, Ky./Ballard) and Hubbard all finished the game with one goal.
Junior Erin Guiliano (Loveland, Ohio/Kings) and sophomore Caroline Eldridge (Amelia, Ohio/McNicholas) each registered an assist, while Murzynski led the team with seven ground balls and Marousek had a team-best five draw controls.
Wittenberg opens North Coast Athletic Conference competition on Saturday, March 31, with a 2 p.m. match against Wooster at Edwards-Maurer Field in Springfield.
