Tigers Notch Decisive Road Win At Mount St. Joseph

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Wittenberg women's lacrosse team is now on their second three-game winning streak of the season following a dominant 17-4 decision over host Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday night. The Tigers are 6-1 overall after opening the season with three straight wins and winning their three most recent games.

The Tigers' 6-1 record under first-year head coach Nichole Johnson represents the best start since the team began varsity competition in 1981. In 1998 and 2001 the Tigers posted 5-2 records to open the season, but never has the team won six of their first seven games.

The Red & White wasted no time against the Lions, jumping out to an 8-1 lead by halftime, powered by three goals courtesy junior attacker Maggie Amorello (Sutton, Mass./Worcester Academy) and two from freshman midfielder Erin Guiliano (Loveland, Ohio/Kings).

Amorello also tallied an assist in the first half, joined by one from freshman midfielder Kellen Morrissey (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) and two from sophomore attacker Jenn Close (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest). In the second half, Guiliano added two more goals to lead the team overall with four.

Morrissey took over offensively in the second half, scoring three goals, including one with just one second on the clock. Senior midfielder Joelle Ghanem (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) and sophomore attacker Krissy Battles (Kingswood, Texas/Kingswood) both notched helpers in the closing period. Wittenberg scored three free position goals in each period.

Senior goalkeeper Bonnie Kenney (Lutherville, Md./Park School) played the entire game in front of the net, allowing just four goals.

The Tigers take a short break before a North Coast Athletic Conference-opening showdown with the Allegheny Gators in Springfield, Ohio, at Noon on Saturday, April 3.
