Wittenberg Falls In Road Opener At Notre Dame

EUCLID, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers finally got on the field again after their game at Notre Dame College (OH) was postponed due to weather on March 17, but the rust may have been a factor in a 13-4 defeat. 

The Tigers dropped to 1-3 on the season, while Notre Dame won for the fifth straight time. Wittenberg opens the home portion of the 2007 season at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 31, against Fontbonne (Mo.).

Notre Dame held a commanding edge in shots, 31-15, and ground balls, 17-8, as the Falcons rolled out to a 9-0 lead by halftime that ballooned to 12-0 midway through the second half. The Tigers did have a 14-5 edge in draw controls and NDC committed nine more turnovers in the game.

Offensively, the Tigers were led by junior Amber Cupples (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster), who scored three times in the game. FreshmanLauren Stets (Westerville, Ohio/North) added her first collegiate goal, while senior Michelle Hanners (New Albany, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls) recorded the Tigers' lone assist.

Defensively, junior Sarah Zane (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) played the entire 60 minutes and finished with 12 saves. Freshman Joelle Ghanem (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) had a fine game with four ground balls, while Cupples topped the squad with five draw controls.
