Tigers Wrap Up Season With Shootout Loss To Oberlin

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers put the finishing touches on a frustrating season with a hard-fought 17-15 home loss to Oberlin Saturday at Edwards-Maurer Field.

The Tigers concluded the season with a 3-11 overall record, including a mark of 0-6 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. After starting the season with five straight losses, the Tigers won three in a row before dropping their last six games, all in conference.

This game started off well enough for the Tigers, who scored less than a minute in and held a 10-7 advantage 7:05 left in the first half. However, the Yeowomen rallied for four straight goals to close the half and take an 11-10 lead into the intermission.

After Wittenberg tied the game briefly, Oberlin took command with five of the next six goals. The Tigers scored three straight goals in the waning moments to pull within one before the Yeowomen scored the game's final goal inside the final second on the clock.

Junior Melissa Jackson had another huge offensive game, finishing with seven goals to run her season total to 43, easily a career-high. Sophomore Amber Cupples had five assists, one short of the school record, to run her season total in that category to 26, the third-highest season total in school history. Freshman Katie Radeackar finished with a career-best three assists and senior Emily Hiscar capped her fine career in the Red & White with two goals.

Oberlin outshot Wittenberg by a 48-35 count, in part thanks to a 13-8 advantage in free position shots. A storyline in the game was the number of fouls - 32 for Wittenberg and 21 for Oberlin.
