Tigers Grind Out Tough Win Over College of Notre Dame

GAMBIER, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers won just two games in 2004, but the plan is to surpass that total by a large number in 2005. After two straight near-misses last weekend on a road trip through Virginia, the Tigers finally picked up win No. 3 with a hard-fought 12-10 victory over the College of Notre Dame in a game played at Kenyon College.

Wittenberg, which improved to 3-3 overall with the win, picked up a career-high tying six goals from sophomore Melissa Jackson. Sophomore Kari Thomas and senior Jenny Burns added two goals apiece and freshman Emine Cirpili and sophomore Michelle Hanners contributed one score each to round things out.

In goal, sophomore Clare Bucheit was solid, turning away 12 Notre Dame shots in the game to preserve the victory for Wittenberg. Her play was key as the Tigers held on by the narrowest of margins throughout. The halftime score was 6-5 in favor of the Tigers.

Wittenberg has almost a week off before hitting the road for a seventh straight time to open the 2005 season. Next week, Wittenberg travels to Notre Dame College (OH) on Wednesday before opening up the home portion of the schedule with a game against St. Vincent on Saturday.
