Springfield, Ohio — For the second straight year, a Wittenberg women's golfer stands atop the local amateur links community after Anne Busam, class of 2012 from Cincinnati, Ohio, rallied for a three-shot victory in the 29th Springfield Women's City Amateur Golf Tournament on Sunday, June 28.

 Busam carded a two-day total of 154 at Reid Park Golf Course. Her 76 on the south course was good for a Day 1 tie, and her 78 on the north course was tops in the field on Day 2. She picked up right where teammate Carrie Frey, class of 2012 from Cincinnati, Ohio, left off a year earlier, when she finished first in the 2009 event at Snyder Park Golf Course.

Busam and Frey have been mainstays for the Tiger program over the last two years as Head Coach Jeff Roope continues to build a squad that is consistently competing with the top teams in the Great Lakes Region for the first time since women's golf became a varsity sport at Wittenberg in 2002. The Tigers broke multiple school records during the 2009-10 season, which was highlighted by a year-ending second-place finish in the Wittenberg Spring Invitational at Windy Knoll Golf Club in Springfield.

With four top-quality recruits coming in and most of the 2009-10 roster set to return, Roope hopes that the groundwork is laid for a breakthrough season in 2010-11. Busam's win may provide some momentum for her individually as she figures to lead a very young squad.

"I'm pleased that Wittenberg women's golf has had back-to-back champions in the City Amateur," Roope said. "I think it says a lot about the direction of our program, and the student-athletes involved in it. Hopefully, this will be a springboard for a great 2010-11 season for both Anne and the entire team."

Most of the players on Wittenberg's men's and women's golf teams are participating in multiple tournaments during the summer months. Roope said another highlight is that five Tiger men's players have qualified for the Ohio Amateur Championships July 12-16 at Kirtland Country Club in Willoughby, Ohio.
