Women's Basketball defeats Wooster 74-38 on Senior Day

SPRINGFIELD — The Wittenberg women's basketball team defeated Wooster 74-38 in a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup in Saturday afternoon's Senior Day game.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (16-6 overall, 9-3 NCAC), Wooster (6-17 overall, 1-11 NCAC)
  • Venue: Pam Evans Smith Arena - Springfield, Ohio
  • The team honored seniors Jade Simpson (Edgewood, Ky./Holy Cross) and Evie Wolshire (Lancaster, Ohio/Fairfield Union) during a post-game Senior Day ceremony.
  • Wittenberg is now 70-11 all-time against Wooster.
  • Second-year head coach Melissa Kolbe is now 37-11 all-time at Wittenberg.

Stat Leaders

  • Four Tigers scored in double figures led by junior Riane Burton (Houston, Texas/Cypress Ranch) with 18 points. Burton added 12 rebounds to her stat line for her seventh double-double of the season.
  • Junior Jazmyn Gaines-Burns (Bladensburg, Md./Elizabeth Seton) finished with 13 points and four rebounds.
  • Simpson and junior Taryn Cash (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) added 10 points each, and Cash posted nine assists.
  • Alexis Lovejoy led Wooster with eight points.

The Game

  • The Tigers opened the game with a 12-4 run, getting six points from Burton, four from Simpson and two from Cash in that stretch.
  • Burton capped the first-quarter scoring with a layup to send the Tigers into the second up 14-8.
  • Graduate student McKenna Baker (Brownsburg, Ind./Bethesda Christian) opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 3-pointer to extend the WU lead to 17-8. A Burton jumper and triple from Cash increased the lead to 22-8.
  • The Tigers led 32-15 at halftime and 56-24 at the end of the third quarter en route to the victory.
  • Wittenberg shot 44.9% from the floor and held the Fighting Scots to 22.8% shooting.
  • The Tigers out-rebounded the Scots by a 40-33 margin.
  • Wittenberg scored 22 points off of 19 Wooster turnovers and finished with a 52-12 edge in points in the paint.
