Angola, Indiana - The Wittenberg Tigers started strong but needed an even better fourth quarter to pull away from Albion for a 76-60 victory on the opening night of the Cameron Classic, hosted by Trine University.
Wittenberg improved to 2-0 on the young season, heading into a game the host Trine Thunder at 3 p.m. Sunday. Albion suffered its first loss to fall to 2-1.
A jumper by freshman Karley Moore (Tipp City, Ohio/Bethel) broke a 58-58 tie with 6:16 remining in the game, and from there the Tigers dominated what had been a tense, back-and-forth affair. Wittenberg closed the game on a 16-2 run as Albion managed just two free throws during that span.
Junior Jazmyn Gaines-Burns (Bladensburg, Maryland/Elizabeth Seton) led Wittenberg's balanced offense with 14 points, followed in double figures by Moore and senior Jade Simpson (Edgewood, Kentucky/Holy Cross) with 12 points apiece. Freshman Madi Barnett (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) added nine points and junior Taryn Cash (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) stuffed the stats sheet with eight points, five rebounds, and five assists.
Two final team statistics stood out as the difference between the two teams. Wittenberg finished the game 6-of-14 from three-point range, compared to just 1-of-11 for Albion, and the Tigers committed just four turnovers in the game, compared to 17 for the Britons.
