Tigers Come Up Big on the Road at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio—Wittenberg women's hoops controlled the tempo of the entire game on Saturday, as the team traveled to NCAC foe Oberlin for a league matchup. Wittenberg outscored the Yeowomen in every quarter except the third, as the Tigers stingy defense and clutch shooting from deep propelled the team 57-51 over Oberlin for a conference win. Sydney Mayle and Alex Kiess combined for 29 points in the victory, as the sophomore tandem guided the Wittenberg offense. The victory puts the Tigers at 6-10 overall and 2-5 in league play, as the team returns to Springfield and is back in action on January 14 against the Fighting Scots of Wooster at 2:00 PM.

GAME BREAKDOWN

  • Wittenberg led by eight early on when Mayle sank a jumper from the elbow with 2:11 remaining in the first quarter, as the Tigers led 16-8.  
  • Oberlin clawed within one point early in the second quarter, but Bobbie Clayton drained a three-pointer late in the quarter to put the Tigers up 26-20.
  • Wittenberg led the Yeowomen 30-23 at the half, as the Tigers finished the quarter with a barrage of three-pointers.
  • Wittenberg controlled the second half, jumping out to a 38-23 lead after Kiess splashed home a jumper off of a Haley Dannemiller steal with 7:57 left in the third.
  • Oberlin would come all the way back within one at 39-38, before Wittenberg took a 43-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • Wittenberg would stand tall at the free-throw line late in the game, sealing the deal for the team on the road at 57-51.
