2002-03 Season In ReviewMarch 14, 2003The Wittenberg University women's basketball team had one of its best seasons ever in 2002-03. The Tigers posted a winning record for the 14th consecutive season, dating back to 1989-90, by compiling a 24-5 overall mark and a perfect 16-0 mark in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

Round Up: Tigers Make It To NCAA Division III TournamentMarch 10, 2003The Wittenberg Tigers entered the 2003 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament as one of the nation's hottest teams, winners of 19 straight games and the NCAC regular season and tournament championships. It all came to a halt, however, in the first round of the national tourney last Wednesday in a 64-57 loss at Baldwin-Wallace.

Round Up: Tigers Take NCAC ChampionshipMarch 05, 2003For the first time in five years, the Tiger women's basketball team will participate in the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament. The Tigers will play at Baldwin-Wallace at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 5. The winner of that game earns a date with seventh-ranked Wilmington in the second round at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Tigers Can't Hold Second Half Lead, Fall At Baldwin-Wallace In NCAA First RoundMarch 05, 2003Early in the 2002-03 women's basketball season, the Wittenberg Tigers ventured north for a nonconference battle with nationally ranked Baldwin-Wallace and came away stung by a 79-53 defeat. What a difference three months makes. While the end result - a loss, this time by a 64-57 count, to the Yellow Jackets - was the same, this time Wittenberg had its fate in its own hands deep into the game.

Women's Basketball to Open NCAA Division III Tournament at Baldwin-WallaceMarch 02, 2003For the first time in five years, the Wittenberg University women's basketball team is headed for the so-called "Big Dance," the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament. The Tigers found out Sunday that they will be on the road in the 2003 competition, starting with a game at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 5.

Wittenberg Overcomes Ohio Wesleyan to Win NCAC Tourney TitleMarch 01, 2003The Wittenberg Tigers had seen this movie before, and they were none too happy with the ending. This time, the Tigers wrote a much more pleasing script for themselves, toppling two-time defending North Coast Athletic Conference tournament champion Ohio Wesleyan, 72-58, on the same court where the Battling Bishops had won the 2002 title.

Wittenberg crushes Allegheny to advance to NCAC Tournament Title GameFebruary 28, 2003The Wittenberg Tigers know that despite winning every game since the calendar flipped 2003, they most likely will have to run the table in the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament to earn an invitation to the NCAA Division III Tournament. On Friday, in the semifinals against Allegheny, the Tigers left nothing to chance as they absolutely buried the Gators 95-27.

Round Up: Tigers Finish Their Regular Season Undefeated In The NCACFebruary 25, 2003The Wittenberg women's basketball team wrapped up the 2002-03 regular season in style last week, crushing North Coast Athletic Conference foes Oberlin and Denison on the Tigers' home court to complete a perfect 16-0 regular season conference record and run their overall mark to 21-4. Last Wednesday, the Tigers rang up their 15th straight win by defeating visiting Oberlin, 97-61.

Wittenberg Advances in NCAC Tournament With Win Over OberlinFebruary 25, 2003The Wittenberg women's basketball team did what it had to do on Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament. The Tigers won in convincing fashion over visiting Oberlin College 86-46 to advance to the semifinals of the conference tourney.

Wittenberg Wallops Denison to Complete Perfect NCAC Regular SeasonFebruary 22, 2003Coming into Saturday's regular season finale at the HPER Center, the hottest team in the North Coast Athletic Conference was clearly the Wittenberg Tigers with 15 consecutive wins. The runner-up was Denison, which had claimed six consecutive victories. On Saturday, the Tigers remained unquestionably the hottest team around by blitzing the visiting Big Red on Senior Recognition Day, 83-55.

Wittenberg Wins Big Over OberlinFebruary 19, 2003The Wittenberg Tigers moved one step closer to the third perfect North Coast Athletic Conference record in school history Wednesday night by easily defeating visiting Oberlin 97-61. The win, the Tigers' 15th consecutive, moved Wittenberg to 20-4 overall and 15-0 in the NCAC, while Oberlin dropped to 6-17 overall and 2-13 in the conference.

Wittenberg clinches share of NCAC title with 62-49 win at EarlhamFebruary 12, 2003The Wittenberg Tigers had to do it the hard way for once, rallying for a 62-49 victory over the host Earlham Quakers after falling behind midway through the second half. The win, Wittenberg's 13th consecutive, improved the defending North Coast Athletic Conference regular season champion Tigers to 18-4 overall and 13-0 in the NCAC, and it clinched at least a share of a second straight conference title.

Round Up: Tigers Take Three Wins, Rather HandedlyFebruary 11, 2003The Wittenberg women's basketball team isn't just beating teams in the North Coast Athletic Conference right now. The Tigers are setting themselves apart from the rest -- by a wide margin. Last week, Wittenberg claimed three more victories, two by stunningly lop-sided margins. The three NCAC victories, over Kenyon on the road on Tuesday and back home in the HPER Center over Hiram and Allegheny on Friday and Saturday respectively, moved the Tigers within one game of a second consecutive conference regular season championship.

Wittenberg runs past AlleghenyFebruary 08, 2003The Wittenberg Tigers moved within one game of clinching at least a share of a second consecutive North Coast Athletic Conference championship with a surprisingly easy 98-45 victory over visiting Allegheny College Saturday at the HPER Center. The Tigers jumped out to a big lead early, played suffocating defense throughout and shot the ball as well as they have all season in running their record to 17-4 overall and 12-0 in the NCAC.

Wittenberg Wallops Hiram as Amber Bishop Enjoys Career NightFebruary 07, 2003The Wittenberg Tigers were dominating in every phase of the game Friday night, crushing North Coast Athletic Conference rival Hiram 91-37 at the HPER Center. The win moved Wittenberg to within two games of claiming at least a share of the conference regular season title for a second straight year and three games of clinching the championship outright and home court advantage in the NCAC tournament as well.

Wittenberg upends Kenyon to Remain Perfect in NCAC PlayFebruary 04, 2003The Wittenberg women's basketball team continued its impressive march through the North Coast Athletic Conference Tuesday night with a 70-57 victory over one of its closest challengers, Kenyon. The road victory improved the Tigers to 10-0 in the NCAC and 15-4 overall and kept the defending NCAC regular season champions three games clear of their nearest pursuers.

The win improved the Tigers to 9-0 in the NCAC and 14-4 overall, compared to 12-7 overall and 8-3 in the conference for the two-time defending tournament champion Battling Bishops. As that illustrates, Wittenberg is now three games clear of the field in the 2002-03 race.

Wittenberg defeats Wooster to finish first half of NCAC schedule unbeatenJanuary 25, 2003Facing a 15-4 first half deficit, the Wittenberg Tigers responded like champions Saturday against the visiting College of Wooster Fighting Scots. The Tigers scored 18 straight points and eventually eased their way to a 36-25 halftime lead. While Wooster threatened at several points in the final 20 minutes, the game was never really in doubt as the Tigers then coasted home to a 76-56 victory.

They play a bruising, physical, defensive-oriented style that forces opponents to play to their pace. The win improved the Tigers to 11-4 overall and 6-0 in the NCAC, while Oberlin fell to 4-10 and 1-6.

Wittenberg defeats Earlham in battle for first place in NCACJanuary 15, 2003The Wittenberg University ran the gauntlet, or at least the closest thing to it in the North Coast Athletic Conference in 2002-03, and came through with a perfect 3-0 record, closing out another title contender, Earlham College, by a 65-55 count at home in the HPER Center. The win improved Wittenberg to 10-4 overall and, more importantly, 5-0 in the NCAC, while Earlham fell to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
