Tigers Walk Off With Game Two Win Against Wooster

Springfield, OH – The Wittenberg University softball team split their final non-conference series of the season, as the Tigers hosted the College of Wooster Fighting Scots. Wittenberg dropped a hard-fought game one, 2-0. The Red and White would take game two by way of walk-off win, 7-6 in nine innings. The Tigers tallied 14 hits on the day, with 10 hits coming in game two against the Fighting Scots. Hanna Ecker went 3 for 4 in the second feature of the day with one RBI. The Tigers laced three triples, coming off the bats of Elise Freeland, Alex Gibson and Megan Niswonger.

Game Breakdown

After Wooster took an early 3-0 lead after the first inning, the Tigers started to chip away at the Scots advantage. Clara Andersen drove in the first Wittenberg run of the day, plating Freeland in the bottom of the first, cutting into the Wooster lead at 3-1. The Scots added to their lead in the third inning, scoring three runs and extending their lead to 6-1. Wittenberg added a run in the bottom of the third, as Adams scored Brooke Dill on the sacrifice bunt. The Tiger offense came alive in the fourth inning, starting with an RBI triple by Gibson, scoring Hannah Weymouth. Wittenberg added one more as Niswonger drove in Gibson with a grounder to the right side. The Tigers held strong on the defensive side, before Ecker ripped a single to left scoring Freeland, cutting the Wooster lead down to 6-5. A Wooster wild pitch allowed Andersen to cross home and knot things up at 6-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning. After an inning and a half of free softball, Adams drove in the winning run after Niswonger led off the bottom of the ninth with a triple.

A trio of Tigers helped secure the game two win for the Red and White, as original starter Kira Van Ravensberg came back in the late innings to pick up her sixth win of the year.

Wittenberg will wrap up the 2021 season at home on Saturday afternoon, hosting the Big Red of Denison University. First pitch is set for 12:00 pm.
