Tigers Split Road Series With Oberlin

Oberlin, Ohio – The Wittenberg University softball team got back on the winning track on Sunday afternoon, splitting the road series with the Yeowomen of Oberlin College. The Tigers fell in a hard-fought first game, 7-5. Wittenberg bounced back to take the second game with a 6-2 win and pick up their first NCAC win of the season. Senior Abby Curnutte powered the Tiger offense on the day going 4 for 6 from the plate and launching two homers in the first game against the Yeowomen. Wittenberg tallied 17 hits on the day with seven going for extra-bases.

Game One Breakdown

The Tigers got the offense going early in game one, as Curnutte sent a solo homer deep in the first inning. Oberlin followed up with three runs to regain the lead in the bottom half of the inning, adding four more runs to their advantage through the second and third innings. The Red and White began their comeback attempt in the fourth, starting with a Missy Lee sacrifice fly to left bringing home Megan Niswonger. Curnutte would help cut into the Oberlin lead in the sixth inning with her second homer of the game, sending the shot to straightaway center field and bringing in Aubrie Stillings. Lee ripped a double to left to score Nikki Hawkins for the final Wittenberg run of the first game.

Katelyn Niswonger went the full game for the Tigers, striking out five while allowing eight hits.

Game Two Breakdown

The second game featured a consistent Tiger offensive attack, as Wittenberg scored in five of the seven innings. Curnutte would get the scoring started for the Red and White once again, bringing around Elise Freeland with an RBI bunt single. Lee extended the Tiger advantage with a home run to left field in the second inning. Wittenberg kept the offense alive in the third when Curnutte brought in Freeland on the sacrifice fly to left. Oberlin found their way onto the board in the third inning. Curnutte drove in a pair of runs in the fifth with a single to center, as the Tigers took advantage of the Oberlin fielding error and moved up an extra base. With the bases loaded in the sixth, Freeland drew the walk to bring in Clara Andersen for the final Tiger run.

Mary Britton took the mound to start the second game, facing 16 batters. Niswonger would come on for an inning and a third of relief to pick up the win. Cassidy Osborne tossed two and two thirds, allowing two hits and striking out one to earn the save.

Wittenberg will return to action on Saturday, April 13, taking a trip to Kenyon College for an NCAC showdown with the Ladies. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1:00 PM.
