SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Wittenberg Tigers closed out the 2013 regular season with a pair of losses to visiting Case Western.

The doubleheader sweep did little to dampen the Tigers' late-season surge, which resulted in earning the No. 2 seed in next week's North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) after Wittenberg won a pair of games at Oberlin less than 24 hours earlier. Wittenberg will head into the conference tournament, which will be hosted by DePauw, with records of 20-11 overall and 10-6 in the NCAC.

Case Western improved to 22-13 on the season after claiming victories by scores of 6-1 and 8-2.

In the opener, the Tigers got a strong start from sophomore Julia Williams (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South), who allowed just one earned run in four innings. Freshman Kaela Hughes (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven hits and five earned runs in 1.2 innings of relief before giving way to freshman Lacey Eigel (Pickerington, Ohio/North), who closed the game out with 1.1 scoreless innings.

Offensively, freshman Shannon Lance (Loveland, Ohio/Kings) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while junior Kaitie Harrison (Springfield, Ohio/Kenton Ridge) went 2-for-3 with a run batted in. Freshman Aubrey Mendez (St. Louisville, Ohio/Utica) added two hits in her three plate appearances.

Eigel started Game 2, yielding eight earned runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings. Williams shut down Case Western from that point on six hits in 3.2 innings.

Lance scored a run and drove in another, while junior Rachel Ross (Westerville, Ohio/South) knocked in the Tigers' other run. Senior Erica Ford (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Hawken) scored a run in her final home appearance in the Red & White.
