Tigers Settle For Split With Wilmington

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — For the second straight day, the Wittenberg Tigers went toe-to-toe with a talented Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) rival in ideal weather conditions. And for a second straight day, the Tigers wound up with a doubleheader split, this time settling for a 4-3 win and a 5-2 loss against the visiting Wilmington Quakers.

The split left the Tigers with a record of 10-6. Wittenberg returns to action on Thursday, March 22, against Otterbein, the third of four straight OAC rivals on the Tigers' 2012 schedule.

In the opener, Wittenberg jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a hit by sophomore Laura Rose (Riverside, Ohio/Stebbins). Her single to right field drove in senior Jessica Snyder (Northfield, Ill./New Trier), and then senior Brooklyn Cox (Dayton, Ohio/Vandalia Butler) followed her home when the rightfielder couldn't find the handle.

After Wilmington struck for three runs in the fourth inning, the Tigers put together what turned out to be the winning rally in the sixth. Freshman Ashlee Wright (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) tied the game with an RBI double, scoring Rose, and then sophomore Kaitie Harrison (Springfield, Ohio/Kenton Ridge) came up with the biggest hit of the game, a two-out RBI single to left field that scored Wright.

The rally made a winner out of sophomore Rachel Ross (Westerville, Ohio/South), who allowed just four hits and one walk en route to her fourth win of the season.

In the nightcap, Wilmington led 2-1 before taking control of the contest with a three-spot in the fifth inning. The Tigers had their chances to answer, but they stranded five runners over the last three innings, settling for a lone run in the seventh scored by senior Tori Amicon (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby).

Amicon and Harrison finished the second game with two hits apiece, while Snyder led both teams with three base knocks. Sophomore Kelby Kittles (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) was tagged with the loss after yielding going 4.2 innings before giving way to freshman Julia Williams (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South), who tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Also of note was the sterling defensive play of senior Katelyn Davis (Bethesda, Ohio/Union Local). She made five putouts and three assists in the opener, including a pair of fine running catches to snuff Quaker rallies. In the nightcap, she added four putouts and one assist.
