Tigers Split Again, This Time With Wilmington

Brooklyn Cox

WILMINGTON, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers have played three doubleheaders since returning from Florida and have ended up with a split each time. After winning once and losing once at home against Malone and Case Western last week, Wittenberg continued the trend with a split against homestanding Wilmington.

The Tigers stand at 5-12 overall after losing the opener 9-5 and winning the nightcap 9-5 against Wilmington, which is now 10-6. Wittenberg hits the road to take on Heidelberg, another Ohio Athletic Conference opponent, on Sunday.

In the opener, the Tigers fell behind by five runs in the first inning and never recovered. Freshman Rachel Ross (Westerville, Ohio/South) went the distance in the pitcher's circle, allowing nine runs on 10 hits and four walks. Six of the runs were earned, thanks to two untimely errors, including one in the first inning that jumpstarted the five-run Quaker outburst.

Offensively, juniors Jessica Snyder (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) and Katelyn Davis (Bethesda, Ohio/Union Local) each collected two hits to lead the eight-hit attack. Junior Brooklyn Cox (Dayton, Ohio/Vandalia Butler), freshman Laura Rose (Riverside, Ohio/Stebbins) and freshman Katie Harrison (Springfield, Ohio/Kenton Ridge) each contributed a run batted in. Harrison's came on her second home run of the season.

In the second game, freshman Caitlin Gowins (Coshocton, Ohio/River View) got the win and junior Anna Kvartunas (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic) tossed a scoreless inning for the save.

The offense posted three different three-run innings in the first four to create enough separation to secure the win. Rose banged out her first collegiate home run and drove in a total of four in the game, while junior Tori Amicon (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) added three RBI and senior Jessi Allen (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) scored three runs while banging out a game-high three hits. Cox added two hits, two runs and two RBI.
