Tigers Run Well Against State's Best at All-Ohio Championships

DELAWARE, Ohio - Wittenberg's cross country resurgence continued at the annual All-Ohio Championship meet, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University. In a meet that included all of the top teams in the state of Ohio, Wittenberg's women placed fourth of 21 NCAA Division III teams, while the Tiger men claimed 13th of 20 teams.

Ranked ninth in the Great Lakes Region since the start of the 2009 season, the Tiger women lived up to that billing with a strong fourth-place finish, finishing behind only Case Western, Oberlin and Baldwin-Wallace. Wittenberg finished ahead of five North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rivals, with only Allegheny and Earlham not involved in the competition.

The women's team leader was sophomore Darcy Dubuc (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven), who placed 15th in a time of 20:06, followed by sophomore Anna Henry (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) in 19th with a time of 20:16. Rounding out the Tigers' five scorers were freshman Biz Goodbarn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) in 24th in 20:34, sophomore Mary Pfeifer (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) in 26th in 20:37 and freshman Amy Stamon (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) in 50th in 21:19.

The Tiger men were paced by junior Kevin Frick (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview), who hit the finish line in 28:26, good for 25th place. He was followed by sophomore Jarrett Cowgill (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) in 66th in 29:27, junior Andrew Carter (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) in 72nd in 29:43, junior Daniel Whonstetler (Prospect, Ky./Sacred Heart) in 77th in 29:56 and freshman Trevor Grandy (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) in 91st in 30:17.

After measuring themselves against the best in Ohio, the Tigers now move on to the pre-regional meet at Rose-Hulman Oct. 10. Most, if not all, of the top teams in the Great Lakes Region annually run in the pre-regional meet.
