Men's Volleyball sweeps Olivet for fourth straight victory

OLIVET, Mich. — The Wittenberg men's volleyball team swept Olivet in a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League matchup on Saturday afternoon, winning the three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-19, 25-14. The Tigers' fourth straight victory improves them to 6-0 in MCVL play.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (14-8 overall, 6-0 MCVL), Olivet (5-21 overall, 0-5 MCVL)

Stat Leaders

  • Sophomore Michael Yurk (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) continued his hot streak, leading the Tigers in kills with 12, and senior Tom Supan (Medina, OH/Medina) added six kills.
  • Sophomore Sam Richardson (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) led the team in assists with 32, which is tied for eighth in Wittenberg history in a three-set match.
  • Junior Aaron Miller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) led Wittenberg with seven digs, and sophomore Dominic Smith (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont) was right behind him with five digs of his own.
  • Sophomore Moose Harper (Columbus, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) had five block assists to lead the Tigers.

The Game

  • In the first set, the Tigers started on a 10-1 run with Richardson serving. Afterwards, they were able to go on another run, scoring 10 points to Olivet's next six to take a 20-7 lead. Sophomore Greg Efaw (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) closed out the first set with a couple of kills after some Olivet attack errors to take the set 25-14.
  • The second set was closer, with the Tigers leading 17-12 at one point. But after that, Harper and sophomore Matthew Gerardi (New Carlisle, Ohio/Tecumseh) both went on serving runs while Supan and Yurk each added a couple of kills to take the second set 25-19.
  • The third set started out close, but Wittenberg quickly took a 14-5 lead when Smith went on a run where he served seven times in a row. Afterwards, Yurk added four kills, while Gerardi and freshman Reese Monnin (Xenia, Ohio/Carroll) each added another, all on Richarson assists. At the end of the set, Richardson was able to add a service ace to cap the match with another 25-14 win.

  • Wittenberg is now 9-1 all-time against Olivet.
  • Senior Andrew Diaz de Padilla (Nipmo, Calif./Central Coast New Tech) has 504 assists this season and ranks third in program history with 1,114 career assists. His 610 assists from last season rank seventh in program history for a single season.
  • Yurk has 268 kills this season and ranks sixth in program history with 461 career kills. He currently ranks sixth in program history for single-season kills.
  • Supan has 389 career kills, which ranks 10th all-time at Wittenberg. His 287 career digs rank eighth in program history in that category.
