Men's Volleyball sweeps Adrian to improve to 5-0 in conference play

ADRIAN, Mich. — The Wittenberg men's volleyball team swept Adrian on Friday night, winning the three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-23, 25-21 to improve to 5-0 in Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League play.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (13-8 overall, 5-0 MCVL), Adrian (13-10 overall, 1-3 MCVL)
  • Venue: Merillat Sport and Fitness Center - Adrian, Mich.

Stat Leaders

  • Sophomores Trajan Kress (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) and Eli Halverson (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) led the Tigers in kills with 10 apiece, and freshman Reese Monnin (Xenia, Ohio/Carroll) was right behind with nine of his own. Monnin also finished with a team-high six blocks, including one solo and five assisted.
  • Sophomore Sam Richardson (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) led Wittenberg in assists with 23, and senior Andrew Diaz de Padilla (Nipmo, Calif./Central Coast New Tech) added 14 of his own.
  • Leading in digs was sophomore Michael Yurk (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) with eight and senior Tom Supan (Medina, Ohio/Medina) with seven. Supan also led the team with three service aces.

The Game

  • In the first set, the beginning was very closely matched with Wittenberg taking a 13-10 lead. But the Tigers went on a run with a few kills from Halverson and a couple more from Kress and senior Kurt Klamfoth (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) before taking the set by a score of 25-17.
  • The second set was a lot closer, as the teams went back and forth until the Tigers took a 23-22 lead. Then, after an Adrian service error, Yurk was able to finish the set with a kill off an assist from Richardson.
  • Wittenberg started on a 4-0 run with Kress serving to start the thrid set, but Adrian fought right back. The Tigers went on another run behind three kills from Monnin, and Kress served an ace before Halverson recorded a kill to take a 17-11 lead. The Bulldogs fought back again until Wittenberg held a 19-17 lead. Wittenberg ended the match with a couple service aces from Supan and back-to-back kills from Supan and Monnin to close it out.
  • The Tigers tallied 40 kills and hit .287 in the match, while the Bulldogs posted 22 kills and hit .036.

  • Third-year head coach Nathan Matthews is now 43-35 all-time at Wittenberg.
  • Wittenberg is now 8-2 all-time against Adrian.
  • Diaz de Padilla has 504 assists this season and ranks third in program history with 1,114 career assists. His 610 assists from last season rank seventh in program history for a single season.
  • Yurk has 256 kills this season and ranks sixth in program history with 449 career kills. He currently ranks seventh in program history for single-season kills.
  • Supan has 383 career kills, which ranks 10th all-time at Wittenberg. His 285 career digs rank eighth in program history in that category.
