Tiger Tennis Sweeps Road Weekend

Lexington, KY – The Wittenberg University men's tennis team opened up their spring season with a road trip to Transylvania University for three matches over two days, taking on Ohio Northern, the host Pioneers and LaGrange College. The Tigers swept the weekend, taking down Ohio Northern 5-4 on Saturday morning, before moving on to defeat Transylvania 7-2 in the nightcap. Wittenberg kept the wins coming with an 8-1 win on Sunday over LaGrange.

Weekend Breakdown

The Tigers jumped out to an early 2-1 lead over the Polar Bears to start the day, as the doubles pairing of John Devito and Michael Hall earned an 8—6 win on the second court. Wittenberg earned their second point on the third doubles court from Gavin Tay and Joe Patton with an 8-5 win over their ONU opponents. Jake Stockhausen picked up the first singles win for Wittenberg over ONU, (6-7, 6-3, 6-2). Joe Patton (6-0, 6-4) and Devito (6-2, 6-0) claimed their matches in straight sets to seal the win for Wittenberg.

The pairing of Hall/Devito picked up their second doubles win of the day, taking down their Transylvania opponents 8-2 later in the day. The Tigers took a 2-1 lead into the singles portion of the match after Jack Rardon and Roy Jensen sealed the third court with an 8-3 win. Tay took his first court singles match in straight sets from Transylvania (6-4, 6-3). Stockhausen earned his second singles win of the day with a (6-3, 6-2) win. Hall earned a singles win on the fourth court with a (6-3, 6-1) win. The Tigers continued to take over the Pioneers in straight sets with Rardon and Jenson earning wins at (6-1, 6-4) each.

The Tigers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead over LaGrange on Sunday, picking up wins on all three doubles courts. Tay took his singles court in three sets (6-1, 3-6, 6-2). Hall earned a three-set win, (6-3, 0-6, 6-2). Stockhausen completed his sweep of singles on the weekend with a three-set win (6-1, 3-6, 6-2). Devito earned a straight victory at (6-2, 6-2). Patton cleaned up on the sixth singles court with a straight-set win, (7(7)-6(5), 6-1).

Wittenberg will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 22 for a home doubleheader from the South Regency Tennis Center, taking on Hope at 9:00 AM and Earlham at 3:00 PM.
