Tigers Wrap Up Spring Trip With Close Losses

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Wittenberg Tigers put the finishing touches on their annual Spring Break trip with a pair of losses, 6-3 to St. Ambrose and 9-0 to Connecticut College.

Wittenberg returns home with a record of 1-6.

Against St. Ambrose, the Tigers started out in a 2-1 hole after the doubles competition. Wittenberg's point came at the No. 1 position, where seniors Alexey Topolyanskiy (Moscow, Russia/School 712) and JiaLang Woo (Shanghai, China/Yew Chung Int. School) won by an 8-4 score.

In singles, Topolyanskiy continued to perform well at No. 1, winning big by a 6-1, 6-0 count, while Woo took the second court by scores of 6-3, 6-3. Freshman Stefan Thornberry (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) added a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4, but the Tigers were unable to secure another point.

The day concluded with a defeat against Connecticut College, but not before the Tigers nearly pulled off a win at the No. 1 doubles position. Topolyanskiy and Woo lost by a 9-7 score, while junior Dennis Gleason (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles) and Thornberry dropped an 8-5 decision at No. 2.

Wittenberg will return to action back home in the Midwest, with three road matches over a 10-day span against DePauw, Ohio Northern and Allegheny, beginning March 18.
