HILTON HEAD, SC - The Wittenberg Tigers got their annual Spring Break trip to South Carolina off to a strong start with a 7-2 victory over Buckeye state rival Defiance.
The win was Wittenberg's fourth straight without a loss in the 2013-14 campaign. Defiance fell to 3-2 on the season.
The match opened with doubles wins for senior Tyler Strong (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) and freshman Juan Mena (Quito, Ecuador/Colego Amrcano-Quito) at the No. 1 position and the tandem of sophomore Stas Pakhomov (Richmond, British Columbia/Sir Winston Churchill) and freshman Akbar Tiwana (Lahore, Pakistan/Aitchison) at No. 2.
In singles, Pakhomov and Mena were dominant at the top two positions, with both capturing 6-0, 6-0 wins. Sophomore Mitchell Patterson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) was a winner at No. 5 and freshman Sean Munson (Chicago, Ill./Roycemore) chipped in with a straight-set victory at No. 6. Strong rounded things out with a three-set win at No. 4.
The Spring Break trip continues with a pair of matches on Tuesday, March 11. The day opens against Penn St.-Behrend and concludes with a match against another Ohio rival, Case Western.
